The phrase "human dignity is inviolable" is a central component of the Basic Law for the Federal Republic of Germany. It can be found in Article 1 paragraph 1 and states that the dignity of every person is inviolable and that it is the duty of all state authority to respect and protect this dignity.
This sentence forms the basis for the entire constitution and all subsequent articles that define specific fundamental rights.
These rights protect various areas of life, such as the right to life and physical integrity, freedom of belief and conscience, freedom of expression, freedom of occupation and property rights.
The inviolability of human dignity is also emphasized in other documents and institutions, such as the European Charter of Fundamental Rights. This charter begins with the same principle: "Human dignity is inviolable."
